Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Red Hot Art Festival this weekend. The weather was great...well, I would have been ok if it was about 15 degrees cooler, but it was warm and sunny! We got a lot of compliments on how cute our tent looked and how well our pieces looked together. I could not have had a better booth buddy. I would say my first festival was a success. I only wish I had a day off to relax, unpack and unwind. But already back to work. Happy Monday!

I've been working like crazy while also preparing for the Red Hot Art Festival this weekend July 31 and Aug 1. If you are near Minneapolis definitely come check out our booth.

I'm joining forces with my friend Shanon of My Fine Garden and our booth is going to look adorable. I'll have my STELLA + HODGE jewelry, cards and prints there and some new stuff. Shanon will have her gorgeous photography and super cute bunting from her other shop Iris Made This. I'm in a mad dash to pull everything together in the next few days, but it should be a lot of fun.

Two days of fun in the historic Stevens Square-Loring Heights neighborhood of Minneapolis. You'll find 100 art booths, 25 bands and local food venders. Stop by and visit!

I am anxiously stalking my mailbox awaiting the arrival of my new Ponder and Stitch cuff. I love the vintage fabric and who can resist the adorable button closure! Amy will also happily customize your cuff with an embroidered word or phrase. Love her shop. The hardest part was deciding which one to order. I'm awaiting the cute one below with the brown button, I love the turquoise roses and medallion print. It reminds me of vintage wallpaper. I've posted some other cuffs available in her shop.

preparing for my next phase

Does anyone else get behind in blogging? I feel so guilty when this happens. And its almost like when you don't call someone back. The more time that goes by, the harder and harder it gets to pick up the phone. I've been terrible at posting lately. But here is what I have been up to...

I've been trying to get things in order before I start my new job in 6 days. This past year has been one of my toughest, and in many ways one of my greatest. Among many others in this terrible economy, I lost my job. A design job I really loved and when you work for a small company, it is very hard not to take it personally. My life felt turned upside down.

But almost always something good comes from something bad. Losing my job, gave me the nudge to open my etsy shop and start this blog. Something I had wanted to do for some time. And it allowed me to freelance and explore the possibility of permanently going that route. But after much soul searching I realized that working full-time for myself is not an option at this point in my life. It's a difficult path in this economy and even harder when you are single and do not have a spouse's income to fall back on. I have been yearning for stability and good benefits and people to interact with on a daily basis.

So I am thrilled to be going back to work. And thrilled to be working for a great company and entering the next phase of my life. I feel lucky. Next Monday I will be starting at Target, working in product design & development. I'm going from working at a 12 person design agency to working in-house for a huge corporation. I think it's going to be a great experience and I'm so excited for the opportunities that await.

In my last few weeks I have been busy tying up loose ends and also preparing for an upcoming out-of-town show, creating many new items. And last weekend I escaped for a few days to my family's cabin. So I'm hoping with more structure in my life I will get back into blogging regularly. And I hope you will still follow and read along :)

At 88 years old, Betty White killed it last night hosting Saturday Night Live. Hands down the best SNL I've seen in a very long time. Maybe ever. Her comic delivery is amazing. She is sassy, vulgar, hip and charming. Which is hard to be good at, period. Not to mention at 88! I swear she just keeps getting better. I'm so glad she lived up to, and surpassed all the hype leading up to the show. If you missed it, definitely look for it online. Go Betty!

I thought I'd share a little design project I've been working on. These hangtags are for a cute little line of gifts for new brand "Oh, Susan Blue." The brand is based on an old nursery rhyme. It had special meaning for the client as a little girl because they shared the same name. I wanted the hangtags to feel vintage with rich textures and also have a playful, childlike quality. I love how they turned out. Working on projects like this makes me want to design all of my materials for STELLA+HODGE. I'll have to hold off for now though.

Several years ago, I experienced the most wonderful gift. Tank Goodness. I was stunned. Not only is this the most genius business idea, but everything about this business is seriously perfect. I know this is extravagant. But when I ran across this item I thought it was too adorable not to share. Most people would consider it insane to spend $2,000 on a toy for their children. my redesigned portfolio

As I mentioned last night I've been spending all my free time working on updating my portfolio. Actually, updating is an understatement. I hadn't worked on my portfolio since 2003 when I graduated from college. I took some photos so you could see what has been sucking up all my time. And maybe this will help you forgive me for neglecting my blog lately :) See some detailed notes below...

I bought this suitcase a couple years back with my portfolio in mind. What started out brown with travel stickers all over it is now a lovely chartreuse.

I love the color green, all shades, and that I love patterns. I bought sheets of linen book cloth and ran it through my printer with a pattern I designed. This fabric is what I used to line the entire suitcase and the inside covers of my book. I then printed all my portfolio pages and used chartreuse book cloth tape when putting the book together. I also added a large chartreuse envelope with a euro flap in the back of my book to hold copies of my resume. There is another small matching envelope that holds my business cards.

I have designed a lot of packaging. And sometimes photos do not do a project justice. Because I had this big case I wanted to build a base inside that fit examples of some of my projects. I took a piece of brown mat board and used my mat cutter to cut windows. And built a base underneath. Because you could see the recessed pockets when the pieces were removed. I lined it all with another blue patterned paper. Just a pretty detail that I think really helped finish it off. I also attached another large envelope in the top of the case to hold a catalog that I designed.

I am passionate about how things are packaged. I'm also very detailed and I wanted my entire portfolio to be a project in itself and really reflect who I am as a designer. I hope you liked taking a peek. I'd love to hear any comments or feedback!

excuses excuses

I feel terrible that I have been neglecting my blog lately. Every bit of my free time has been put toward redoing my design portfolio. Carrying case, actual book, layouts, editing photos, printing pages, creating a web portfolio. This project has been long overdue. I don't know if non-designers understand how much time and detail goes into our portfolios. A good book makes such a huge difference. The difference between getting hired or another designer out there getting hired. Lets face it, the pool of unemployed designers is a very crowded one, so you really need to stand out.

I'll take some photos tomorrow in case anyone is interested in how it turned out. In the end, I'm feeling really proud and happy with how it turned out and even had two interviews last week in which I received great feedback.

I've had a lot of fun searching thrift and antique stores for vintage tins to turn into these adorable necklaces. The search itself and thinking about the story behind each piece is almost as much fun as seeing the finished product! They will be in my shop very soon.

I got totally geeked out when I bought this vintage collection of goodies. I'm a sucker for anything with pattern, so the sheets of vintage wallpaper sold me on this pack from HopeAnd JoyHome.etsy.com. She has all kinds of cool finds in her shop, but I LOVED these collage packs made up of wallpaper, sheet music, dictionary pages, vintage taffeta ribbon and little key envelopes from the electric company. I have no idea what I will make with all these goodies, but I'm so excited to think of something.

I rounded up a group of my favorite wall clocks. I LOVE this frame clock. You can fill it with photos or funky collages like shown here, just adorable and from DutchByDesign.com. Super fun etsy shop FaireHoure.etsy.com has beautiful clocks made of repurposed china. DecoyLab.etsy.com sells wall art with clock functionality. This piece is printed on bristol paper with a sturdy backing. PilotDesign.etsy.com has many unique, modern clocks like this honeycomb pattern lattice clock. The last two designs can be found at Generate. The butterfly clock comes in 4 pieces to arrange yourself. And the Cuckoo Forest clock is a modern version of Grandma's old clock. I'm really digging all the fire king mugs out there right now. Fire king glass also known as milk glass or jadeite was originally produced for every day use between the 1940's and 1979 made by the Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation. Some are collector items and can fetch more than $200 a piece and some hold very little value.

I love them for their milky color and bright retro patterns. Collecting them has become very trendy and many can be found on etsy and ebay or of course your local antique and thrift stores. This image was found on style-files.com and is a great example of just a handful of designs out there.

Yellow and gray are a very popular color combo right now. And of course I am totally in love with it. I freaked when I saw this sheet set from West Elm...who am I kidding, this whole bedding set. I must have it.

I've already been having visions of what my bedroom makeover will look like. These printed sheets and the mustard quilt and shams from West Elm. This simple but lovely herringbone pillow from CB2 with yellow piping (what a pretty detail!) And I recently bought this gorgeous geometric fabric that is practically screaming for me to make a pillow. Along with these pretty Amy Butler fabrics found at buttercuppityfabric.etsy.com that would also be wonderful as accents. And to top it off I ran across this totally sweet Town Print from lisajonestudio.

I'm guilty of neglecting my blog over the holidays. My shop was super busy, which was great! Along with Christmas, my birthday and new years all in the span of a week and a little getaway to the cabin, I am trying to get back in the groove of things.

With the MN temps in the negatives and having nearly 21 inches of snow dumped on us this December, it is hard not to curl up on the couch and hibernate. But it is a new year and today there is a blue sky and the sun is shining...even if it is only 5 degrees! I came across these gorgeous plants made of lovely colorful fabric from janejoss.etsy.com. No matter what the weather outside these handcrafted florals will stay in bloom every day, freezing temps or not.

I thought I would share some creative gift wrapping ideas I've gathered. I LOVE wrapping gifts. I'm teetering on being obsessed with wrapping paper and all that goes along with it. So I will show some ideas to make your gifts look stunning. I will be trying some along the way as well and will show you my results.

Monogram gift tags. I LOVE this example of simple solid paper with fun patterned initial tags. You can use recycled holiday cards, patterned paper or just wrapping paper backed with something more sturdy. I've done this before and it is an easy way to personalize a gift and turns out super cute. And the beaded letter accents really dress up a package and make it look elegant. I told myself I was not going to buy any new wrapping paper this year, because I seriously have like 20 rolls of wrapping paper. I don't collect pewter or dishes or vintage toys. I collect wrapping paper. And everything that goes along with it.

And I partially blame Martha Stewart. Every year she sucks me in with all her adorable crafts and wonderful ideas. Not to mention her wrapping paper and ribbon. Yes, I bought two more rolls of wrap this weekend.

I kind of feel like a geek because I am so excited about these, but I came right to my computer to blog and share my excitement. I buy most of my supplies on etsy because the selection is outstanding and I like to support other shops. But as a lot of you know, sometimes when you order supplies online you don't know exactly what they will look like in person.

When I saw these beads, I fell in love. They were coming from Hong Kong, so I had to wait a while, but I've been super excited to get them. They arrived in my mailbox today and seriously took my breath away. The imperfect nugget shape. The gorgeous vibrant colors. They seriously look like candy and are even better than I hoped they would be. I cannot wait to create something gorgeous with these beads. I love when you come across a find like this.

If you like the custom silhouette portraits in my shop, I've got a new item just for you. I now have custom silhouette necklaces. These are super cute and make great gifts. What mom wouldn't treasure a keepsake necklace of their little ones.

You send me a photo. I create a silhouette of your loved one. Shrink it down. Seal it several times. Adhere it to the pewter pendant frame and then it gets filled with non-toxic ice resin. It needs a few days to set and then I string them on a delicate silver chain and they are ready to go. So cute!

Yay! I got my first swap package!

I was super excited to find a package on my doorstep on Saturday. If you recall, I signed up for the Shop Swap & Blog a short while back. I wanted to send a big thanks to Pattie who coordinated everything on her blog MyStructuredChaos.blogspot.com, which I know was a lot of work.

My first swap package came from Thuy over at lollielicousdesigns.etsy.com. I was lucky to get a box filled with all kinds of goodies. It was hard being patient enough to not rip into everything before taking pictures. And of course my camera battery was dead. Take a look at all the fun stuff she sent me. I love it! A pretty flower accented headband with cute button detail. A felted flower hair clip (love the rhinestone accents.) Pretty felted brooch with pearl center. And my favorite are the fabric covered button hair pins. All her stuff is so cute and so much fun. And her packaging all looks great together! Make sure you check out her interview at the bottom.

Thuy, pronounced Twee, is married to the love of her life and has a 5 year old son Nicholas who is full of energy. Thuy works full time as a nurse by day and by night is when she can let her creative juices free to design her super cute hair goodies for her shop.

Her hair goodie business is something she never thought she would be doing, but it stumbled upon her, she went with it, and couldn't be happier. She doesn't know what the future holds, but she plans to keep her etsy shop going, while also filling wholesale orders and hopefully expand even more. Thuy gets great pleasure seeing little girls wearing lollielicious in their hair. That, and all the wonderful repeat customers are what keep her busy.

I love Halloween. I love costumes and dressing up. But I refuse to buy store-bought costumes and we all know how much work it can be to put together a great costume. Plus when you tend to be a creative perfectionist, procrastinator and control freak, it can really be exhausting. I have been sewing my Halloween costume the last couple days. Actually two costumes. I do not really sew. Especially without a pattern. But with my lovely moms help, the costumes are complete. She has since informed me that next year she is going out of town for the month of October. I say that's ok, because I'm staying home next year. Until 12 months from now and I forget all about how much work this all was. My wishlist this week is inspired by my Halloween costume.

paper and ribbon flowers

I have decided that if and when I ever get married. I am having paper flowers. And it isn't because I'm cheap or weird. Anyone who knows me, knows I get totally geeked out with paper. The color. The texture. The pattern. Wall paper. Wrapping paper. Any paper! Think about it, paper flowers are always in season and will last forever. They are inexpensive and creative. And they are totally elegant and gorgeous. Anyone who thinks this seems goofy. Take a look at these paper bouquets and tell me that real flowers would be any more beautiful. Didn't think so.

This shop is seriously on my list of absolute favorites. KnockKnocking.etsy.com is like a little land of fairytales. Agnes, from Austin Texas, creates these wreaths and it's like each one tells a little story. The unique trinkets and details are beautiful and whimsical. TV's tufted headboards

I am totally jealous of the gorgeous colorful tufted headboards that keep popping up on TV shows. Some day I will have one. I first fell in love the the Draper's headboard on Mad Men (which btw is the best show on TV!) The set and costume design on that show is the most amazing I have ever seen. Now this season I am drooling over Rebecca and Justin's bed on Brothers & Sisters. I absolutely love this one. I love that it also has the foot board. And the jewel-tone green is amazing. It is probably good I do not have a bed as gorgeous as these lucky TV characters. I would probably never get out of it. Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Since here we are, on October 14 and we have already had snow and freezing temps here in Minnesota. I think winter has arrived. Dear, 2 weeks of fall. It was great to see you and I'm so sorry you had to leave so soon. But with the colder weather, it makes me appreciate the crisp beauty of things. Especially birch trees.

identity refresher

I don't know about you, but after you look at the same banners, business cards and packaging alllllll the time. Sometimes its good to do a little identity makeover. I was getting tired of green, so I switched up my Stella color palette and had some new business cards printed. I had three cards printed. One a regular business card. One that I use to write my thank messages on the back with each order. And one that, once cut down, turns into my earring cards and hang tags. I bought orange accent buttons and eyelets. And all three cards have a different coordinating orange pattern on the back that matches up with Stella's dress, of course.
